In California, a group of mothers and their children were forcibly evicted from a vacant home they had been living in for over two months in an effort to draw attention to the housing crisis in Oakland. The home, owned by Wedgewood Properties, became known as “Mom’s House.” Two of the mothers were arrested and the group was evicted by heavily militarized police early one morning, drawing public scrutiny that became “too much to bear, not only for Wedgewood, but also our mayor who had been silent on this issue up until then,” says Moms 4 Housing member Misty Cross. In a surprising victory, the real estate company agreed to meet one of the collective’s demands and sell the property to Moms 4 Housing at a fair price through the Oakland Community Land Trust. “We are still skeptical on how this whole agreement came into play. It went on with our Mayor Libby Schaaf behind closed doors,” says Cross. “Why are they now trying to settle things after all of this trauma has been caused to us?”
