Since June 2019, thousands of demonstrators have marched through Hong Kong in ongoing pro-democracy protests that were originally sparked by a controversial bill that would have allowed for suspects to be extradited to mainland China. Over 7,000 protesters have been arrested, and have consistently faced police brutality. Democracy Now! recently spoke with Chinese filmmaker Ai Weiwei at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, about his next project’s focus on the Hong Kong protests. “This is a very beautiful revolution,” he says. “It set a perfect example of the next generation on how they would fight these kind of powerful state power.”
His newest documentary “Vivos” premiered at Sundance Film Festival this week. The film shares the plight of the families of the 43 students who disappeared from Iguala, Mexico, in 2014, otherwise known as the Ayotzinapa 43. “The Mexican police, when they shoot … students, the guns they use are from Germany,” he says. One “can easily find traces of rich nations” in countries such as Mexico, but they “are not supporting the democracy in those kind of states because they know democracy will not make them so easy to be profitable.”
