On the Pulaski Bridge, the gateway from the northernmost tip of Brooklyn to Long Island City and overlooking midtown Manhattan, we look out on a hazy skyline over dim silhouettes of the storied city in the distance and listen to the jumble of noises that fill the air.
Japanese Guy, the bastard child of Fleet Foxes’ Skye Skjelset, Andrew J.S. and Chris Icasiano hop the median, dodge couriers and make tracks towards the bridge’s apex.
A crane arms swings low under the bridge, collecting scrap onto a barge to be sent up the East River. Trucks speed by behind, planes above, constructions punctuates the short silences with its percussion.
The noise-makers we have followed to the scene set up their sparing assembly, arrange themselves to listen for cues and launch into two sets of prepared improvisations that phase in and out of the surrounding din, blending the whole into an ordered cacophony, a score apropos to the incidental music that encompasses us.
