special release of 7 short films to celebrate Persian New Year / Nowruz
extract taken from a longer film on the Friday ritual of Najjar, in the mountains of the Kermanshah province of Iran. A Sufi gathering after the Friday prayer, involving more than a hundred men (women are having their own celebration in another room), with a zikr (the ‘remembrance’, main part of Sufi gatherings) following a common meal, and lasting around one hour. The Sufi rituals in the provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan are still widely celebrated, while in other parts of Iran they are much more hidden and not open to outsiders those days.
