As Brazil sees more than 800 deaths in 24 hours and nearly 400,000 confirmed cases, world-renowned Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado says COVID-19’s impact on Indigenous people has been devastating. Indigenous people in Brazil, many of whom do not have the immunological tolerance of their neighbors in larger towns and cities, are dying at double the rate of the rest of the country. Salgado wrote an open letter to right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, who called the virus a “little flu,” to warn him the pandemic is an extreme threat to the “very survival” of Indigenous people in Brazil. “He is not respecting these territories protected by law,” says Saldago.
