Donald Trump’s victory by a razor-thin margin in the key states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin gave him the electoral votes necessary to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. In part two of our interview with Academy award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore, the Michigan native reflects on the type of candidate the Democratic Party would need to put forth in 2020 in order to turn the tide from red to blue in these Midwestern battleground states. “There comes a time when the boot has been on your neck for so long, you can’t breathe. And you have decided, I’m tapping out,” Moore says of the typical Midwestern working-class voter, who — as he points out — is more likely to be a young woman of color than the stereotypical “angry, old white guy” that the media so often presents as a straw man. “The largest party in America is the non-voter party — over 100 million strong. All we need are a few million of them to have a sense that, you know what? This candidate is going to fight for me. This candidate is not going to sell out.”
