On Monday, a federal judge ruled that owners of the Dakota Access Pipeline must halt all operations and drain the pipeline of its oil, delivering a welcome victory to members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who have been fighting its construction since 2016. Ojibwe lawyer and founder of the Giniw Collective Tara Houska says the decision to route the pipeline through Standing Rock Sioux Tribe territory was “clear, obvious environmental racism and disregard for Indigenous lives.” The pipeline, which was originally scheduled to be constructed near the city of Bismarck, was rerouted to intersect with tribal lands. “It has been four years of knowing that that pipeline is only a couple of hundred yards from the water intake of Standing Rock Sioux reservation, of knowing a break could impact not only that reservation but the 17 million people that live along the Missouri River,” says Houska.
