Six years after Iraqi refugee Maha al-Obaidi resettled in the United States, her family remains divided. While three of her sons are thriving alongside her in New York, two others, her husband and a grandson are still in the Middle East.
Follow Maha as she becomes an American citizen. Not only will she gain all of the rights afforded citizens in the country where she has “put down roots.” Citizenship will allow Maha to visit her loved ones more securely, once the coronavirus pandemic allows for it, and she hopes it will bring her closer to her biggest dream: making her family whole again, in America.
The International Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.
