COVID Christmas. The evil cretin lies and babbles and golfs – current tab for 300-plus days on the links: $151.5 million – in collusion with comic-book villains as America burns. Its stricken people get sick and go hungry and lose jobs and homes. Its hurting children, 12 million or one in six of them poor and/or hungry, act out a “horror story about American poverty” by asking a virtual Santa Claus created by the Post office for all the things they’re denied by “the cruelest” capitalism – not just iPhones and Pokemons but food, Internet, a coat, a mask, a new wheelchair, $100 for their parents “having a rough time with the bills,” a couch that’s also a bed for a one-room apartment where their parents sleep on the couch and wake up with back pain, and a cure for “crona” to “save the world.” Meanwhile, in a dystopian twist, its Scrooge-like billionaires double their unholy fortunes even as they endanger and abuse their workers. So much for good will toward bipeds. For a moment of mercy, we turn to the bittersweet specter of aged Spanish ballerina Marta González Saldaña, aka Marta Cinta, whose life was long, murky and meandering. Shortly before she died a year ago of Alzheimer’s in a Valencia care home, she was filmed by Asociacion Musica para Despertar, an organization that supports music therapy for those suffering memory loss. Coaxed by love and music, she comes back to life and memory, dancing from her wheelchair to Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake from her wheelchair – grace, grit, hope, sorrow incarnate for the surreal times.
