Labour is now the largest party in local government, surpassing the Tories for the first time since 2002. The Tories lost ground to Labour in traditional “red wall” seats (former Labour strongholds in the North and Midlands which had switched to the pro-Brexit Tories), and to the Lib Dems in the “blue wall” in the Tory shires of the South.
