New York, September 8, 2023–As the United Nations prepares to begin its annual General Assembly, CPJ will take part in a September 12 media briefing by the UN Correspondents Association on the arbitrary detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and what it means for reporting in and on Russia. The briefing will start at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

Gershkovich has spent almost six months in detention on allegations of espionage — the first U.S. journalist to face such charges since the Soviet era — sending an alarming message to all journalists covering Russia.

The briefing panel will include leaders from The Wall Street Journal, press freedom advocates, and a senior UN representative, and will provide an update on Gershkovich’s case and its implications in Russia and globally.

The briefing will be held in the UNCA briefing room in New York. Accredited reporters are invited to attend and to ask questions. Media accreditation for members of the press attending in person can be obtained via MALU
