A video of a chaotic brawl outside Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College in Bangladesh has gone viral on social media. It has been shared with captions alleging that it depicts violence against Hindus in the country.
For instance, X (formerly Twitter) user Neeraj Singh Dogra (@dogra_ns) tweeted the video on November 26, 2024, with the caption, “Genocide of Hindus in Bangladesh is an eye opener for the Hindus of India and rest of world. Don’t abandon your brothers and sisters in Bangladesh who the facing the wrath of Islamists since the ouster of Hasina”
The tweet has amassed over 3.64 lakh views.
Jitendra Pratap Singh (@jpsin1), a frequent disseminator of misinformation, tweeted the video with identical wording.

Suvendu Adhikari (@SuvenduWB), BJP MLA from Nandigram and the leader of the opposition in West Bengal, tweeted a 2:45-long video compilation with a caption that read, “Persecution of Minority Sanatani Community in Bangladesh . Attack on Hindu Temples False cases against Hindu Leaders and vocal members of the Community Police atrocities and custodial violence on Hindus. Violent attacks by radical mobs in Hindu residential areas Looting Hindu owned shops. Vandalising Hindu owned properties. I can go on and on… I will stop short of labelling it as Genocide just yet, but it’s a humanitarian crisis nonetheless. All Eyes on Hindus of Bangladesh”.
We noticed the first video clip which ended at 22 sec, is a part of the viral video.
The tweet has over 1.27 lakh views. These claims imply that the viral video is evidence of communal violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh.
Fact Check
We found a tweet by an X account Banglar Chele (@iSoumikSaheb), who tweeted the video along with a caption that read, “Clear Video Of Mob Lynchings Today. Everyone Was Beating Everyone. No Kids Showed Any Mercy. Looks Like Everyone Was Thirsty For Blood. Azaan Was Going On In Background, This Kids Didn’t Even Respect That!! Abhijeets Condolences Messages In College Gate Is Still There. Who Knew The Dengue Death Of Abhijeet Will Trigger Such Destruction Of His And Other Colleges #Bangladesh”.
This very tweet was misleadingly quote-tweeted by Neeraj Singh Dogra, mentioned in the claim section.
Upon closer examination, we identified a watermark from “bdnews24.com” on the video, which led us to find the original footage of the video on the official Facebook page of bdnews24.com. The caption read, “ ‘Mega Monday’: Mollah college turns into a battlefield, over a hundred injured students of Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College in Matuil, Dhaka, have clashed with students from Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College.”
Taking a cue from this, we conducted a relevant keyword search that led us to several news reports. According to Prothom Alo , on November 25, 2024, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DMRC) was extensively damaged and looted by students of two colleges Shaheed Surhawardy College and Kavi Nazrul College.
“Hundreds of students of Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul College attacked DMRC around 12 in the noon. A chase and counter chase between the two groups was ongoing till 1:00pm when this report was filed. Locals joined DMRC during the clash.”
Click to view slideshow.It is to be noted, that the students of DMRC claimed that their fellow college mate, Avijit Hawlader, died due to medical negligence at Dhaka National Medical College. This led to extensive vandalism at Dhaka National Medical College, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, by the students of DMRC. According to Kaler Kantho, “At this time, they also attacked and vandalized Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul College.”
Witnesses said that the Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College came under attack in retaliation of yesterday’s vandalism.
Bijoy Ahmed, a student of Bangla department of Shaheed Suhrawardy College, told Prothom Alo, “Students of Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College vandalised and looted our college yesterday. We’ve come to take revenge. We entered the Mollah college and took away whatever we found.”
To sum up, the video of the fight is due to the feud between students of three colleges. There is no communal angle associated with this brawl.
