Trigger Warning: Images of Corpse
An image of the dead body of a woman wrapped in a white cloth is viral on social media. Users are sharing this as the aftermath of an incident from Rajasthan. It has been claimed ‘society has lost yet another heroine’. The viral message suggests that the culprit was purportedly one Mohammad Abid, a Muslim man who killed his wife Neelam after she protested when he wanted to marry another woman. In other words, it has been alleged that a Muslim man killed a Hindu woman.

Ashish Vyas, a verified X user who claims to be a supporter of Nathuram Godse, shared the photo with similar claims, like ‘Society has lost yet another heroine, her Abdul was not like that’. (Archived link)
Bhagwa Raksha Vahini’s national president Ashish Tiwari also shared the photo on his Facebook page with a similar claim. (Archived link)

Fact Check
Alt News performed a reverse image search to gather more information about the viral photo. This led us to a post on KBN 24 News’ Facebook page dated January 21, 2025 in which the viral photo was shared. It is stated here that the body of a woman was found in the Bhakra canal near Ropar in Punjab. The deceased, hailing from Himachal, was a model in Chandigarh and lived in a hostel with her sisters. Continuing the investigation, we found reports from other outlets including ABP News, Navbharat Times, Jagran and ewn24 news. All of these reports identify the deceased young woman as Nisha Soni (22). According to police probe, she was killed after being pushed into the canal by her own lover. Ropar Police registered a case in the matter and detained Yuvraj Singh, a policeman, on the charge of murder. He was posted as a constable in Mohali police station. The accused was already married, and allegedly killed Nisha to hide their affair from his wife who had gone abroad and was about to return.
ewn24 news has also posted a video report of the information related to this incident.
We also looked for reports of a certain Mohammad Abid killing a woman named Neelam, as claimed in the viral social media posts, but did not find any news report or information related to any such incident.
To sum up, the name of the deceased woman seen in the viral image is Nisha Soni, and the name of the accused in the case is Yuvraj Singh, who is a policeman. The image is being circulated on social media with a false communal angle. The claims that the woman’s name is Neelam and the accused’s name is Mohammad Abid are false.
