Noticeably absent from the Yellow Vest protesters in the streets of France are people of color. The movement is seen as largely white, and minority groups in France have been wary of joining the rowdy protest for fear of being associated with violence. When it started, the movement was more diverse, says journalist Alexis Poulin, but the white, rural, working-class protesters have now become some of the Yellow Vests’ loudest voices.
