Iranian state television says Iran intends to build a new nuclear power plant by early 2014 alongside its sole existing one in the southern city of Bushehr.
The report, quoting Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization chief Fereydoon Abbasi Davani, says the 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant would be built during the Iranian calendar year running from March 2013 to March 2014.
The announcement comes in the wake of nuclear talks in Baghdad on May 23-24 between Iran and world powers.
Those talks collapsed but the sides have agreed to meet again in Moscow on June 18-19.
The current Bushehr nuclear plant was started by German engineers in the 1970s before Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
It was completed by Russia, which provides fuel for it and continues to help keep the facility running.Print
